The Spanish Needle, scientifically known as BidensPilosa, is a medicinal herb in the Asteraceae family. The plant is native to South America, but it has spread to many tropical and subtropical regions around the world. The annual plant grows to about 2 metres in height and spreads aggressively, becoming weedy at times. The leaves of the Spanish Needle are oppositely arranged, and the plant can flower at any time of year. In Jamaica, the plant is commonly known as Black Jack, Needle Grass, Broomstick, Beggars Tick, and Demon Spike Grass.
